Reasons Why Your Refrigerator's Ice Maker Isn't Working

If you have an ice maker on your refrigerator, then you probably appreciate its convenience, but know that many things can go wrong with it. Ice makers are actually fairly simple in how they work, but they do require some maintenance in order to keep them running properly as well as keeping your ice from tasting funny. Here are three things that could go wrong with your ice maker and tips on regular maintenance so it stays trouble-free.

No Ice is Being Dispensed

If nothing is coming out at all when you press the ice button or lever, then the first thing you should check is the water lines. They may either be blocked or broken and may need replacing. You should also check the supply valve which controls the water pressure because no or low pressure will mean no ice. You could also have a broken or stuck bail line that may falsely indicate that the storage area is overfilled and is keeping the machine from making ice.

Leaking or Watery Ice

If you're getting watery ice, then the first thing you should check is the thermostat for the correct temperature. You may wish to lower the temperature, a little bit at a time, until the cubes come out firm. If that is working OK, then it's possible that the room temperature is too warm making it difficult to form ice. This is actually normal and once temperatures go down, it should begin working again. If it's leaking, then you will want to make sure all the valves, rubber seals and fittings are fully secured

Ice Tastes Funny

If your ice maker is producing enough cubes, but they taste bad, then it is time to do a thorough cleaning. Start with cleaning out any spoiled food from the refrigerator. If your ice maker comes with a filter, change that out and clean out the ice bin. Make sure the water inlet valve is secure because if it's broken, smells can seep in.

Caring for Your Ice Maker

The main thing you need to do to keep your ice flowing and tasting good is the regularly clean out your ice maker and your refrigerator. Turn off the machine and wipe down the bin and drain cap. If your machine comes with a clean cycle, then use it according to manufacturer's instructions with an approved cleaner. Change your water filter about every three to six months in order to keep it working effectively.
